CHICAGO (RNS) The windows are boarded-up and there's a "Keep Out" sign in the windowsill. Convicted of fraud in France, impugned by former celebrity members and accused of coercing estranged practitioners to stay against their will, the Church of Scientology has encountered a fair share of bad publicity in recent months. But in Chicago, the religious movement founded by the late science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard appears to be flourishing. Signaling that success are plans for a new seven-story Illinois church headquarters slated to open next year in Chicago's historic Printer's Row. The restoration of ...

Church of Scientology goes for zoning change // Printers Row residents worry about parking, solicitation — Chicago Journal
Type: Press
Author(s): Micah Maidenberg
Source: Chicago Journal
Church of Scientology members, Printers Row residents and 2nd Ward Alderman Robert Fioretti tussled Tuesday evening over a church Scientologists want to establish at 650 S. Clark. The group is seeking to change the building's zoning from DX-12, a downtown mixed-use district, to DR-10, a downtown residential classification. The change would allow the church to develop their religious center in the empty building without obtaining a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals, as the current zoning requires. The group ...

Speaking of Scientology — Chicagoist

Author(s): Alicia Dorr

For those interested in learning more about Scientology off the job, the church is expanding its Chicago presence. The Church of Scientology is setting up shop at the former Artcraft Building in the South Loop, at 650 S. Clark. When the flagship center opens next summer there will be activities, social services and, presumably, auditing. The building’s previous tenants, ACORN and the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, moved out because the space and crumbling façade needed attention that the previous owners weren’t willing ...
