Beck's Benefit Show at the Echo Tonight: What Exactly is "Educating Children International"? — L.A. Weekly (California)
More: follow-up
Type: Press

[Picture / Caption "What exactly is Educating Children International?"] There's a mystery brewing regarding tonight's Beck show at the Echo, which is being billed as a benefit for something called "Educating Children International." The flyer, posted above, lists the organization's website as www.educatingchildreninternational.org, but there's nothing at that URL. We took the process one step further and did a domain search, and, lo, the address is listed as available for purchase. So the question becomes, what lies at the other end ...

Beck's show tonight will benefit Scientology-affiliated charity — Los Angeles Times (California)
Type: Blog
Author(s): Margaret Wappler
Source: Los Angeles Times (California)
There's been a touch of Internet controversy today about Beck's somewhat-impromptu show at the Echo tonight, first started by blogger Sketchytown, then picked up by the LA Weekly's West Coast Sound blog. Both blogs raised a flag about a charity cited on the show's promotional material, Educating Children International, which, according to the promo poster, will get the "net proceeds" of the show priced at a cool $35. Nothing was mentioned about any connections with Scientology, and the website for the ...

Author(s): Brandon Ivers
Source: The Stranger (Seattle, Washington)
SCOTT BEALE Beck Don't believe everything that you breathe. "Hi! Could we tempt you with some delicious bars?" It's 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, and my sister and I are at the Minneapolis Church of Scientology. We've been standing at the entryway for two minutes now, completely paralyzed. Our secret plan is definitely not working—these people cannot be bought by conventional means. "Okay. If you don't want any bars, can I ask you a few questions?" The middle-aged guy standing in ...

Beck still puzzled about Scientology-linked deaths — Channel 3 (New Zealand)
Type: Press
Source: Channel 3 (New Zealand)
Rocker Beck is still trying to make sense of the deaths of two acquaintances that have been linked to his Church of Scientology faith. Theresa Duncan died of a drug overdose in July 2007 after telling friends she feared Scientologists were stalking her for trying to help Beck escape from the Church. Her grief-stricken fiance Jeremy Blake committed suicide a week later. Beck maintains he knew Blake socially but only knew Duncan through a film script she handed him, about a ...

The Golden Suicides — Vanity Fair
Type: Press
Author(s): Nancy Jo Sales
Source: Vanity Fair
On a rainy October night in Washington, D.C., the friends and family of Jeremy Blake gathered for a private memorial service at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Blake, an art-world star acclaimed for his lush and moody “moving paintings,” shape-shifting innovations mixing abstract painting and digital film, had ended his life on the night of July 17, walking into the Atlantic Ocean off Rockaway Beach, Queens, never to return. “I am going to join the lovely Theresa,” Blake, 35, had written ...
