RIVERSIDE — In the face of continued criticism, Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone Tuesday temporarily tabled his proposal to amend an anti- picketing ordinance to make it less restrictive, leaving the current restrictions in place. Early last month, the Board of Supervisors tentatively agreed to revise Ordinance 884, which prohibits “targeted residential picketing” closer than 30 feet from a person's home. Stone sought to drop the distance to 3 feet. The board was scheduled to formally adopt the change Tuesday. But ...

People protesting at residential properties in unincorporated Riverside County soon will be able to get closer to their targets. The Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday to revise a measure that prohibits picketing within 30 feet of the property line of the targeted residence. Under the new proposal, protesters can get as close as three feet from the property. "I think it is a worthwhile compromise," Supervisor Jeff Stone said. Supervisors adopted the measure, known as Ordinance 884, in March 2009. Stone ...

A decision on whether to evaluate realignment options for Gilman Springs Road north of San Jacinto was put off indefinitely Tuesday by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. The board voted after hearing that postponement would ensure interested parties are available to comment at a later date. The Church of Scientology and its Golden Era Productions last year expressed a willingness to study alternative alignments of the road, which bisects its Golden Era Productions studios, as a possible prelude to removing ...

A proposal to evaluate realignment options for Gilman Springs Road north of San Jacinto near the Church of Scientology's Golden Era Productions site will be considered by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. Last year the church group originally sought to amend the county's general plan to close the road but subsequently backed the study idea. Planning Director Carolyn Syms Luna is recommending supervisors tentatively decline to initiate a review that could remove the road from the county roads ...

NEW ROUTE?: Commissioner says it’s not likely road will be closed to public. Riverside County Planning Commissioner John Petty said this week not to read too much into the recent approval of a Gilman Springs Road study, even if the Church of Scientology is billing it as the first step on the road to removing the route from the county’s general plan. The Church of Scientology owns the film-making studio Golden Era Productions, which sits on both sides of Gilman Springs ...

Riverside County planning commissioners support the idea of a study that will look at possibly realigning Gilman Springs Road north of San Jacinto where it bisects the Church of Scientology's Golden Era Productions. The commissioners' comments came during a meeting Wednesday in Riverside and will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors, which could either order the review or find that the group's interest in amending the county's general land use plan is not appropriate at this time. Attorney Samuel C. ...

SAN JACINTO: Gilman Springs route may be studied — Press-Enterprise (Riverside, California)

The possibility of realigning Gilman Springs Road, which bisects the Church of Scientology's Golden Era Productions site north of San Jacinto, will get its first airing before the Riverside County Planning Commission on Wednesday. When the idea was first aired in summer 2009, the San Jacinto City Council objected because of the route's regional significance. Verne Lauritzen, chief of staff for county Supervisor Jeff Stone, who represents the area, said the supervisor would consider it only if the church paid for ...

[...] 72. Guilt, shame, and separation constituted the social and psychological force that induced sustained, long-term commitment. Physical force, physical abuse and the fear of even greater abuse if one tried to escape were powerful deterrents to any attempts to leave. It could easily be argued that these coercions could have been sufficient to keep anyone from ever making an attempt to get out. There was, though, another level of forces exerted by Scientology that made leaving even more costly – ...

Scientology’s hardcore critics say getting the church investigated is an uphill battle—and wonder if the religion has friends in high places The rush of cars zooming down Gilman Springs Road reminds Francois Choquette to watch his step on the dirt shoulder of the busy, two-lane highway to his right. SAN JACINTO, Calif. – At the edge of arid foothills far outside Los Angeles, hundreds of Scientology followers live on a gated, 500-acre campus and work long hours for almost no pay reproducing the works of founder L. Ron Hubbard and creating the church's teaching and promotional materials. The church says its 5,000 so-called Sea Organization members are religious devotees akin to monks who are exempt from wage requirements and overtime. But two lawsuits filed by two former Sea Org members, ...

[Transcript by Anonymous @ http://forums.whyweprotest.net/1207504-post1/] Hello, everyone. I guess I'll start off with borrowing a lyric from The Grateful Dead: "What a long, strange trip it's been." My journey into Scientology started in 1976. I was in San Francisco and I was a young guy; I was twenty-one years old and full of piss and vinegar, trying to figure out what to do with my life. And I was walking down the street and this very attractive woman came up ...

I have known the staff at Golden Era Productions for well over 20 years, and I have to say that I really take offense to the article that Charlie Hand wrote Dec. 18 about the lawsuit against Golden Era. As someone who has visited Golden Era numerous occasions, I have met countless friendly, productive individuals who are dedicated to their chosen vocation and way of life. They are there because they are deeply committed to the social betterment programs they ...

A lawsuit seeking unspecified back wages describes the Scientology compound outside San Jacinto as a virtual prison camp in which workers are forced to put in long hours in exchange for little pay, to give up their children to a boarding school where they are taught only about Scientology, and to give up their right to communicate with those on the outside. Hopefully Monday’s deluge will wash away the Church of Scientology’s wish to vacate a section of Gilman Springs Road. Scientology officials want to close the road where it runs through Gilman Hot Springs, home to their Golden Era film and sound studios near San Jacinto. Scientology leaders maintain that the busy, curvy road is too dangerous to carry traffic, but on Monday, the high road was one of the safest routes between the San Jacinto Valley and the world. Like many ...
