Scientology proponents, critics banned from Wikipedia editing — Tampa Bay Tribune (Florida)
Type: Press
Author(s): Ray Reyes
Source: Tampa Bay Tribune (Florida)
Wikipedia has blocked users from the Church of Scientology, along with Scientology's critics, from editing articles about the church found on the online encyclopedia. A team of 15 senior editors called an arbitration committee had been keeping an eye on the more than 400 articles about Scientology and noticed a series of additions and deletions that slanted the bias of the entries, Wikipedia spokesman Jay Walsh said. Some of the IP addresses of users editing the articles came from Church of ...

CLEARWATER - The Church of Scientology has added to its downtown property holdings, buying a 5-acre waterfront parcel from church members whose plans for a condominium failed. The church paid $10 million for the property along North Fort Harrison Avenue but has no plans for it, church spokeswoman Pat Harney said Thursday. It could become part of the church's expansion of the Sandcastle complex that fronts Clearwater Harbor, she said. "Now we have a little more land to play with," Harney ...

Although it started with about 50 people at 3 p.m., the number swelled to about 200 an hour later. Joshua Nussbaum, 20, an organizer, said the point of Saturday's protest was to focus public attention on what he says is the church's practice of ostracizing loved ones perceived as a threat. Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Clearwater public safety spokeswoman, said ...

Scientologists spreading into Plant City, beyond — Tampa Bay Tribune (Florida)
Type: Press
Author(s): Baird Helgeson, Ray Reyes
Source: Tampa Bay Tribune (Florida)
Scientologists describe their religion as a cathartic journey toward happiness and clarity of mind. Church of Scientology critics call it kooky science fiction disguised as religion. Whatever you believe, the church says it is growing. Although the church's membership remains a much-debated mystery, its land holdings tell the story of a robust organization in the midst of a new chapter of growth. Worldwide, Scientologists say they have bought 21 buildings they plan to turn into churches. Still, some former Scientologists and ...

CLEARWATER — No end is in sight in negotiations between Pinellas County and the Church of Scientology over the church's $5 million tax bill. Neither side would talk about the negotiations taking place in front of a court-appointed mediator. Mediator William Fleece adjourned the talks Monday, and the two sides may not meet again for months. "If we had reached something, obviously we wouldn't have adjourned," Pinellas Property Appraiser Jim Smith said. "I don't think we will lose anything by talking, ...
