The San Luis Obispo County coroner attempted to independently confirm Tuesday that Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard has indeed died, while church critics voiced skepticism over the circumstances surrounding the death. Sheriff-Coroner George S. Whiting said his office was trying to verify Hubbard's death by checking fingerprints taken from what church officials said was Hubbard's body shortly before it was cremated Saturday. Whiting said he would take several days to match the prints with a copy known to be ...

SAN LUIS OBISPO (AP) — Coroner's investigators plan to verify the death of Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard by matching fingerprints taken from a body at a mortuary here. But the delayed announcement of the reclusive science fiction writer's death combined with a series of court battles against the wealthy church he founded prompted at least one opponent to claim the death reports may be a hoax. Church officials announced Monday night that Hubbard, 74, died of a stroke ...

In a unique courthouse scene, more than half the group lined a hallway five deep on each side outside the courtroom of Judge Paul G. Breckenridge Jr. during a hearing on former Scientologist Gerald Armstrong's $60-million fraud suit against the church. The disparate group, which included ...

PORTLAND, Ore. — Duane Wolcott lives at a Christian church here, earning his keep as a custodian. He decribes his principal occupation, however, as "street evangelist," and it is his belief that this week the mysterious hand of God tossed him a terrific career opportunity. The burly 49-year-old could be found at a park by the Willamette River, happily passing out Christian pamphlets to Scientologists attending a free concert by one of their own, jazz musician Chick Corea. "We feel God ...

Attorneys for the Church of Scientology finished their cross-examination of a former Scientologist Friday without attempting to use the last two of four surreptitiously recorded videotapes made for the purpose of discrediting him. The latter tapes, made in Los Angeles In November 1984 without the knowledge of Gerald D. Armstrong, a church critic who appeared on them, were delivered to Multnomah Circuit Judge Donald H. Londer Friday. Londer had learned of the existence of the tapes Thursday and ordered them produced ...
