September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery month, but for millions of reformed abusers of alcohol and other substances, the cause for celebration was a hard road. According to Derry Hallmark, recovered addict turned Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Oklahoma-based Narconon Arrowhead, only one in 10 addicts is successful in rehabilitation programs. The success rate for those addicted to drugs like crack, he said, is only about one in five people. "All drug use starts as an attempt to solve ...

DESTIN — Destin's hands are tied if Narconon Gulf Coast wants to open a home for recovering addicts in a city neighborhood, a city attorney says. "I'm aware that you're tempted to shoot the messenger on this because it may not be popular with all the residents," City Land-Use Attorney Scott Shirley told the City Council Monday. "It's something the city's required to accept." Narconon Gulf Coast wants to open a "community residential home" for recovering addicts, in addition to the ...

New court rulings in South Florida may give Destin the power to stop Narconon Gulf Coast from opening a halfway house in a single-family neighborhood, City Councilor Dewey Destin says. “Give the land-use attorney the chance to do his job,” Councilor Destin told the council Monday, after which the council voted unanimously to have Land-Use Attorney Scott Shirley study the Boca Raton cases in question. The drug treatment program Narconon has been controversial because of its ties to Scientology, and became ...

Some residents in Destin are upset about the possibility of another Narconon drug rehabilitation center opening in their neighborhood. There's already one center operating in a residential area, and apparently some homeowners believe the program is too close to home, but the residents may not have a choice in the opening of the new facility. These trees hide the Narconon Gulf Cost a safe haven for recovering addicts. Debbie Ross and her husband converted their home off of scenic 98 into ...

Destin can’t stop Narconon Gulf Coast from opening a “community residential home” for recovering addicts as long as the home abides by Florida law, the city’s land-use attorney says. “The state has made a decision to encourage the treatment of individuals â€Â¦ in a community homelike setting,” Land Use Attorney Scott Shirley told the City Council Monday, and that pre-empts the city’s zoning and even homeowner association covenants. It wasn’t what the council wanted to hear. “If I put myself in ...

The Narconon drug-treatment program can open a "community residential home" for recovering addicts in a single-family neighborhood, city staffers say. "We have determined that they are abiding by the state statutes," said Destin Planning Manager Ken Gallander. "Now they have to get licensing from the state." Debbie Ross of Narconon Gulf Coast said that while Narconon has looked at a home in the Emerald Breeze subdivision off Emerald Coast Parkway, it has no firm plans, no contract and no lease. "We ...

Tribal members are getting advice, free trips—and perhaps a new rehab program—from their connection with L. Ron Hubbard's church. Is this the help they need? In 1964, when Rayola Running Crane was just 13, her parents sent her away from her home in Browning on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. She and her friends were drinking alcohol on a regular basis, and she had already been in an alcohol-related car accident that caused her permanent back injuries. She says her parents gave ...
