Updated after the jump with details from the Sheriff's Department about Montalvo's arrest. First posted at 12:36 p.m. A strange and twisted tale emerged from blogland this week – the story of a Scientology refugee who was reportedly talked into returning to the organization, grilled by a church lawyer and subsequently arrested. Daniel Montalvo, 19, leaves Scientology, which convinces LA sheriff to jail him for it — Village Voice
Type: Press
Author(s): Tony Ortega
Source: Village Voice
An amazing story is hitting the Internet today of 19-year-old Daniel Montalvo, a lifelong Scientologist who decided to leave the wacky cabal, only to find himself arrested by LA sheriff's deputies and facing prison time for it. The tale comes courtesy of Marty Rathbun, formerly one of the highest officials in Scientology who defected and has kept up a withering takedown of the "church" on his blog. Rathbun writes for fellow ex-Scientologists, so there's a lot of jargon and coded references ...

The man who allegedly tried to extort $25 million from John Travolta claims the Hollywood actor is “betraying” him, RadarOnline.com is reporting. Ex-ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne, who is accused along with attorney Pleasant Bridgewater of a plot to extort money from the Grease star, says he has been “duped” by the actor who had promised to drop charges against them. Scientologists charged with extremism — Moscow Times
Type: Press
Source: Moscow Times
Prosecutors have opened a criminal case against a Scientology center in the town of Shchyolkovo, 13 kilometers northeast of Moscow, on charges of inciting hatred, punishable with up to five years in prison. Investigators have decided that documents and literature confiscated at the center promoted extremism, a law enforcement official told Interfax, without elaborating. The decision was based on expertise conducted by leading Russian linguistic institutions, including the Linguistics Institute at the Academy of Sciences, Interfax reported. In April, works by ...
