Fire at Church of Scientology in Annerley — Courier Mail (Australia)
Type: Press
Author(s): Anna Chisholm
Source: Courier Mail (Australia)
A FIRE broke out at The Church of Scientology of Brisbane at Annerley overnight. Emergency services said material in a courtyard caught fire and affected a couple of air-conditioning units. The flames started just before 2am on the corner of Dudley and Hastings streets. QFRS Brisbane Duty Manager of Operations Phil Klemm said the fire was not suspicious. "From our perspective there was nothing suspicious - the courtyard was open to the street," Mr Klemm said. "We're unsure of the cause ...

A tax-free life is the holy grail, but churches might have to prove they're acting for our benefit — Courier Mail (Australia)

NOT far from where I live stand two semi-completed townhouses, their derelict state an invitation to the bulldozer and a reminder of somebody's inability to service a dream. St John's Cathedral stood incomplete for nearly a century and, while far from derelict, it too was a dream of religious grandiosity beyond the capacity of its parishioners. Unlike my near-neighbours, the Anglican Church was able to rally supporters to fulfil its dream. Among them was the Federal Government, which kicked in a ...

Nazi-uniformed protesters get Kohl shoulder — Courier Mail (Australia)
Type: Press
Source: Courier Mail (Australia)
German Chancellor Helmut Kohl ignored protesters wearing Nazi SS uniforms as he boarded a boat for a Sydney Harbour cruise yesterday afternoon. A group of 30 Church of Scientology members, some wearing Nazi SS uniforms and carrying placards reading "Hands Off Our Religion" and "Is Germany Really A Free Country?", heckled Dr Kohl before his cruise. Protester Liz Reeve said the German Government was orchestrating a campaign against Scientologists, even taking their children from schools. "That shouldn't be happening to children ...

Persecuted in France — Courier Mail (Australia)
Type: Press
Author(s): Lyn Smith
Source: Courier Mail (Australia)
I refer to the article "Ex-Scientologists testify to suffering" (C-M, Oct 4). Scientologists and non-Scientologists alike have come out in defence of the religious persecution in France. First, the French Government blows up the Rainbow Warrior, then despite world condemnation, they expose the Pacific to atomic fallout. Now we have them deciding that a new religion has become too popular and a threat to their hypocrisy. Scientology may be new and controversial but no one can deny it is the fastest-growing ...

Outlawed, but active — Courier Mail (Australia)
Type: Press
Source: Courier Mail (Australia)
A BRISBANE woman has received a Scientology publication by mail from Melbourne. It is post-marked "Russell Street." The Victorian Attorney-General (Mr. A. G. Rylah) said earlier this week Scientology literature was being mailed into Victoria from London. The movement was banned in Victoria last December. Mr. K. V. Anderson, Q.C., reported that it was a perverted and dangerous form of psychology. The copy of "Communication" mailed from Russell Street to the Brisbane woman this week is the January issue and is ...
