RE Travolta's Battlefield (May 7) which reports on John Travolta's new film about Scientology. Now I've heard it all. Subliminal messages in our movie theatres - what next? LSD in the popcorn as part of some pre-conditioning experiment by the Psychlos? This so-called watchdog, FACTNet, wouldn't be the first small group that has come up with some "controversy" to launch themselves into the spotlight. The only connection between Battlefield Earth and Scientology is the author, L. Ron Hubbard. Mr Hubbard was ...

A telex sent in April 1987 to Scientology's Melbourne Office of Special Affairs from its Australian-New Zealand headquarters tracks the church's defensive strategy in response to an investigation by the former television program 'Willesee'. The program was looking at a woman's claim that her trip into the Russell Street headquarters had almost cost her $43,000. The telex spelt out a seven-step program for defusing the story. One course of action was to loudly brand the investigation a "set up". "(The) Church ...

Scientology grew out of the ashes of L Ron Hubbard's 'new science' of Dianetics, which enjoyed a brief vogue in the America of the 1950s then faded to bring its founder close to bankruptcy. In this second extract from the book the Church of Scientology tried to ban, RUSSELL MILLER describes the bizarre, science-fiction basis of the new, highly profitable religion and Hubbard's self-appointed mission to 'save the world' —– L RON HUBBARD had often said: "If a man really wanted ...

"Corrupt, sinister and dangerous" were the words used to describe the Church of Scientology in a judgment given by Mr Justice Latey this summer. He also referred to it as "immoral and socially obnoxious". But who controls the Church now? A major Sunday Times Magazine investigation into the activities of the cult in America and Britain has uncovered a disturbing and extraordinary story — the takeover of the organisation by a small band of youthful fanatics following the disappearance of the ...

A proposal that scientology should be banned throughout Australia will be made by the Minister for Health, Mr. MacKinnon, at the annual Health Ministers' Conference in Perth on April 12. The conference will be attended by the Federal Minister for Health, Dr. Forbes, and by health ministers of all States. The Minister for Health, Mr. MacKinnon, is expected to announce soon what action the State Government will take against scientology. Mr. MacKinnon said last night he might make a statement in the next week or so. Public health authorities in WA have almost completed a study of a Victorian report on scientology. The report was prepared by Mr. K. V. Anderson, QC, and tabled in the Victorian Parliament last month. Mr. Anderson denounced scientology and said it was evil, depraved and ...
